Quote of the day

Peter Robinson, First Minister, MLA and finally, MP for E. Belfast:
"While personally I made no secret of the fact that I would have been content to concentrate on the Assembly I understand the access that comes with being a Member of Parliament is important for the leader of unionism, whoever that is."

Bit parochial and presumptious there. Unionism doesn't begin and end at Aldergrove and Larne Harbour; the leader of Unionism, the United Kingdom variety, is David Cameron. Robbo can thus rest easy and concentrate on the Assembly.

The Robinson's seem to know no shame - "Everyone else has to have only one job except me. My wife's lost her job recently due to ill-health and I need to keep up the house payments. You know how it is..."

If you care about the representation at Westminster, it's advantageous for a party leader, particularly if he's FM, to be able to speak in that chmaber during debates. Particularly if you have some leverage and can head up the negotiation.

Leader as MP and everyone else as seprate jobs seems a perfectly reasonable position.

If Peter Robinson had concentrated on one job before his family life might not be in such a mess now.

Salmond isn't standing this time and apart from the constitutional differences between their parties, his position within what is becoming a quasi-federal structure is the same as Robinson. Dodds is quite capable of leading the DUP at Westminster (eg he has a much more integrationist mindset and has got involved with UK-wide issues to a much larger extent than Robinson over the last 12 months)...perhaps though that's what worries his leader?
