Uk, UK- (almost) Top of the League!

A picture and final Olympics medals table to make all sour nats (and Aussies!) weep:

Country: Gold: TOTAL:

China- 51: 100:
USA- 36: 110:
Russia- 23: 72:
UK- 19: 47:
Germany- 16: 41:

Of course, Britain's athletes haven’t followed the nationalists’ preferred narrative on this one by being actually proud to represent and win medals for their nation- thus the general swilling round of lemons round various petulant mouths. For Unionists and the vast majority of the rest of the UK, however...well, we can only rejoice; we, the British (the English, the Northern Irish, the Scottish and Welsh), did brilliantly!

And this has got to rank as one of the best slap-downs of the Salmondistas I’ve seen for a long time:
For him to call for a Scottish Olympic team at this stage is ridiculous. I wouldn't have three gold medals hanging round my neck if I wasn't part of the British team.

I'm a Scottish athlete in a British team, and I'm proud to be a British athlete.

Triple gold-medallist Chris Hoy, proud Brit and Scot ridiculing the SNP’s and a fly-by-night tourist’s squeals for a separate Scottish team.

If "amount of medals won in total" is the bar we use when discussing UK v Scottish team then surely we should all push for an EU team? We'd win more medals than everyone then and could bask in our European glory ;-)

A different way to look at it is that with a seperate Scotish team more Scots could get the honour and privilidge of competing at the Olympics.

The amounnt of medals won isn't really that important other than for the fact that if Team GB had dived at the Olympics we'd have been hearing more "Union is Doomed" stories from the usual suspects. And I really doubt we'd get many athletes expressing such a pride in being European as opposed to British (and English/Welsh/Scottish/N>irish).

Theoretically. But that would depend on:
1. Funding
2. Reaching the minimum qualifying standards in certain sports.

England did very well.

Good to see you back o'neil. And don't grudge ye your wee bit of straw grasping. Funny thing is the teacher asked the children in my wee boys class if they were all supporting team GB and wasn't it exciting. She got one positive reply according to my wee fella. All of this London centred glorious achievement nonsense will be over before you have unpacked your suitcase.

Enjoy your fun, it's been a long time, and will be longer still again I fear.

Since when is it team UK i dont think i heared it being called that once in the two weeks. Lets face it there was more Northern Irish on the Ireland team than team GB

wyrdtimes,

I didn't see them anywhere on the official medals table....

Tony,

Bit sad about the kids not feeling able to support their athletes, how much does that come down to their parents' attitude?...good point ws made in (I think) Scotland in Sunday:

But “Salmond’s approach to the Olympics”, in which “goodwill or congratulations have been directed only at the Scots athletes taking part, has been “churlish and petty” and has shown a “lack of generosity of spirit”

Where did I mention Team UK?
There were, however athletes competing from all, 4 home countries, therefore it was a UK team.

Lets face it there was more Northern Irish on the Ireland team than team GB

There were also sportsmen with NI connections competing for other nations... doesn't mean I should be forced to support Australia, Canada or New Zealand etc.

Don't think that's what anonymous(whomever he is) was suggesting there o'neill. Though it would have been nice of you to have supported your fellow Ulstermen who were competing on behalf of their nation.

The Scotland on Sunday really isn't in any place to criticise Salmond here. They are so out of touch with the changing opinion in Scotland. It is within his remit to specifically praise the Scottish athletes, and the aim is to have a Scottish Olympic team.

>>Bit sad about the kids not feeling able to support their athletes<<

Not really. Only some were our athletes.

>>how much does that come down to their parents' attitude?<<

All of it I hope `;¬)

I'd wish them well personally, it's just that they're not competing on behalf of my nation.

Is Chris Hoy entitled to criticise (indirectly) him then?

Ahh you Unionists, going the same way as the Soviets, starting to believe your own propaganda. Here's what Chris Hoy actually said;

"TRIPLE gold medal hero Chris Hoy last night said he'd be proud to be part of a Scottish Olympic team.

The Edinburgh cyclist rubbished reports that he thought the idea was "ridiculous". Speaking exclusively to the Record, he told of his pride in his home country.

And he said he believes Scotland could form a world-class team - with the right investment in sports.

Chris was given a hero's welcome when he landed back in Britain on Monday after winning three golds in Beijing.

But the 32-year-old said: "I feel a bit upset that I have been quoted as saying the idea of a Scottish Olympic team is ridiculous.

"If and when a Scottish team was put together, I would be delighted to represent Scotland in the Olympic Games."

He didn't say this?

No one is saying he didn't, but Unionists have been basking in the 'ridiculous' comments for days, and they have been proved to Unionist warping which Mr Hoy is clearly unhappy with.

Also I take exception to the supposed 'SNP’s and a fly-by-night tourist’s squeals for a separate Scottish team.'

from Rob Dinnwoodie-

"Two minor points about the attacks on the SNP for supposedly spoiling the party – last week, after Chris Hoy's third gold, the Scottish Government initially offered simple congratulations, with no talk of a separate Olympics team until his senior advisor was pressed on the subject by the Daily Telegraph. Similarly, at the weekend, communities and sports minister Stewart Maxwell was speaking to the BBC about housing and was then asked about Olympic Team Scotland."

Not exactly squeals.... Those could be loudest heard from Unionists like yourself basking in the only good news the Union has had, or likely to have for some time.

O'Neill said...

So, last weekend was the first occasion, under severe provocation from the Daily Telegraph, when the SNP mentioned a separate Scottish Olympic team?

Hoy has publicly demonstrated that, despite the SNP's propaganda, it is possible to be and have pride in being both British and Scottish, that's good enough for me.

Congratulations Team GB!

The separatists are really hurting on this one which makes our collective success even the more sweeter:)

Anonymous beat me to it. However to answer your general point, of course. It is a democracy, isn't it?
