SENIOR Labour figures want Peter Hain parachuted in as First Minister* after Rhodri Morgan’s retirement because of an absence of alternative candidates, the Western Mail has learned.
A lack of suitable successors among the current crop of AMs has convinced a number of party members that an external figure – like Mr Hain or MEP Eluned Morgan – should be brought in to fill the void.
Although having Hain in charge can only damage the devolution experiment even further in Wales; but even so, this kind of political wheeling and dealing does sound a bit ermm...what’s the word...sleezy?
In Mr Hain’s case, the present Neath AM Gwenda Thomas would be prevailed upon to stand down, possibly with the offer of a peerage.
The theory is that with Mr Hain unlikely to regain a Cabinet position in Westminster, he could be persuaded to crown his career with a period as First Minister of Wales.
Of course, Mr Hain, with his past recent history, really does deserve to “crown his career”... and I’m sure he would take a lot of persuading.
In the case of Neath the national press and bloggers would have a field day with Peter Hain.
Yep, can't wait!
*Please tell me it's all a big joke.
