Labour and the Orange?

It'll be interesting to see Labour's reaction to this:
The head of the Orange Order has branded the growth in support for the SNP as the "biggest problem" facing the country.

Grand master Ian Wilson added said that members may be urged to vote Labour in some constituencies in the forthcoming election in an effort to stem the support for nationalism.
I'm not sure saying this in public was that great a tactical move by Ian Wilson. I'm also not sure, given the history and traditions of Labour in Scotland, that his members will listen to him anyway.

In the name of God man, you should know by now that if a Grand Master says something then
a) he is right
b) that´s it.
Being a Grand Master myself, I should know about these things.
Yes to Dissenters, no to dissent.

This is full of historical paradox. Ian Wilson has scored a spectacular own goal. Doesn't he realize the demographics of Glasgow NE? I hope they will go about campaigning in their Orange sashes...maybe they will call in reinforcement from the Irish lodge.

Grandmaster,
Succint and to the point. Sorry to hear of your troubles with the Oberammergau Concerned Residents and good luck with your Xmas bash!

Shane,

Like I said, it wasn't a very good tactical move if he is serious about it having any kind of success. The OO is so secretive about so many other aspects of their organisation, this kind of what?...command would have been better passed directly to the members rather than via thge media.

I'm not sure I like what you are inferring here, if you are that is. Strange that you feel no need to mention that a legitimate party like London labour would not touch the fundamentalist, supremacist OO with yours.

The Tory vote stands @ around 7% in Glasgow north east, probably mostly OO leaning bigots as upper middle class areas just don't exist there. Should some of said bigots swing labours way then that should seal it for them, especially as the SNP candidate is a Catholic. Something that was highlighted for the knuckle-draggers long ago.

Wonder why that should matter?

Ps. SNP candidate is quite impressive, put alongside the rest Sheriden apart he is a total standout. Perhaps those tempted to go out and vote(perhaps for the first time) against the Taig will just vote for Smeato.

I wasn't inferring anything really, the Scottish Labour is/was not the natural home for your typical Orangeman.

The Labour Party, generally, would hop in bed with the devil if they thought it could give them any kind of gain.

This comment, I suspect unguarded, has slipt past the PR folk:

Michael MacMahon, the Labour MSP for Hamilton North and Bellshill, and a Catholic, said that he welcomed the support. He said: "I have a good relationship with the Orange Order. They understand the importance of the Union and they understand the threat."

Mr. O´Neill,
Many thanks for your kind words. You are of course welcome to the Xmas Party, a speech from a real Ulsterman would be most welcome if you felt up to it. Be sure to bring a lot of pretty women.
all the best
Grand Master

Considering that most Catholics still vote Labour, getting into bed with the grand dragons is not a good idea even for these mercenaries. Many prominent labourites once came from an Irish republican background but I'm sure that the philosophy of Tone is not uppermost in their minds here. It is ironic that in the same week as we have them up in arms regarding airtime for the BNP we have them welcoming the support of the OO. Only in Scotland or Ireland could this happen. The English for once are far too sensible.
