Quote of the day

Cochrane has spoken:
Everyone assumes, and the polls agree, that the Union is under no threat. I’m not so sure. There are forces, both active and passive, on both sides of the border that are undermining it and Unionists, of the Scottish and English variety, must work harder to preserve it. For one thing, they could stop tormenting each other. For another they could stop appeasing the separatists.

Simple as that!

If the threat is more real then why not consider electoral pacts to prevent the SNP getting a head of steam from a Westminster election?

I'm going to leave that first of all for any Scottish Unionists to answer, if there's none, then I'll have a go.

Apart from the democratic argument against pacts, would those electoral pacts be likely to increase the over all vote for pro-Union parties, ie would lifelong labour voters be prepared to vote for Conservative, Lib Dem candidates etc?

An increased number of SNP MPs is not good news, a decreased vote for pro-Union opposition candidates would be even less good news.
