Faraway clowns calling London?*

Bearing in mind that it is (hopefully) their own money and the banks are earning interest on money deposited even on current accounts, then...a fair enough comment:
"ATMs that charge people to withdraw their money are cashing in on some of the most vulnerable people in our communities, says Plaid AM Dai Lloyd. Dr Dai Lloyd who is Plaid Cymru’s social justice spokesperson has said that it is high time that charges on ATMs were regulated at a government level."
But this bit puzzles me:
"Very often people living in these communities do not have the luxury of being able to travel to withdraw cash. Their options have been further limited by the London Labour Post Office closure programme."
The London Labour Party has that kind of power?
"The Plaid AM for South Wales West is calling on the London Labour government to regulate ATM proliferation and charges in order to ensure a fair deal for Welsh communities, particularly for those on low incomes who are hit hardest by these charges"
Ah right, the London Labour Government. But aren’t the Conservatives now, having won the majority of seats in the capital’s Assembly, the de facto "London Government"? What exactly have they got to do with Welsh ATMs?
"I am calling on the London Labour government to take immediate action to…blah, blah, blah"
OK, Dr Parochial Lloyd got the message by now; even when dealing with a matter of real social concern you can’t resist having a childish separatist swipe at your sovereign parliament. There is no "London" government, Labour or otherwise.
There is a United Kingdom government consisting of Labour MPs from England, Scptland and Wales which sits at Westminster- try addressing them by correct title and they might even start taking your concerns seriously.

*For any music anoraks reading, connection between the title and a punk classic?

Presumably "London Calling" by The Clash but I don't get the link with "Faraway Clowns" - unless it's Hendrix's "All Along the Watchtower" which has the line "said the Joker to the Thief"?

Because let's face it, the Banks are a bunch of thieving crooks who have successfully bullied the jokers running the country into propping them up with taxpayers money. As you might guess, I don't think it right that ATMs charge you for withdrawing your own money, (at least if you're in credit). This is something that is a major issue in rural areas with fewer alternative options.

It's not the Labour Government of London he's talking about but the Government of London Labour.

The accusation that Welsh Labour was nothing more than "London Labour" in disguise was an effective slogan in the first Assembly election in 1999.

Wildgoose,

Spot on!

"Government of London Labour" is still inaccurate. It is a UK party and government, just look which part of the UK so many of its top members come from.

It was a Plaid Cymru political slogan in 1999. It wasn't meant to be accurate! Someone should probably drop Dai Lloyd a hint that it's sounding rather 'old hat'.
