Quote of the day

North Belfast UUP MLA Fred Cobain:
Speaking of what the Conservatives have been saying under David Cameron's leadership, he said: "There have been a lot of positive messages for people who are unionists in the real sense and not just narrow-minded bigots.

"I think this is a wonderful opportunity for unionists here to fully participate in the Union."

"I don't know anyone in the DUP who I would regard as being a socialist," he said.

"In fact, the vast majority of them are far to the right of even the Conservative Party.

"I'm getting a bit sick listening to people talking about left and right politics when they don't know what they are talking about."

Chekov

Who are you referring to?

Those socialists who live in areas almost bereft of less well off working people. Those socialists (in Northern Ireland) who supported 40 day detention and back to the hilt a party which targeted its tax rises at the poorest people in society.

Next time your in North Down go for a walk through Kilcooley or any of the other housing estates in Holywood, Bangor or Ards or maybe visit some of our wonderful schools like Movilla High and then try to claim that it’s “almost bereft of less well off working people".

Oh dear putting Fred Cobain on to talk about narrow minded bigots when the Sunday World has just revealed that Nicholson's psoters are being put up in North Belfast by....the UDA.

Anon.

Got a text earlier about the UDA putting up posters. I recall something similar being mentioned in relation to North Belfast in 2007?

Diane Peacock front page of Sunday Life.

UUP/UDA in the Sunday World (?).

Really is a shit week for UCUNF.

Disclaimer: I should really use the UCU acronym, but I am completely smitten with UCUNF for some reason!

You're seriously arguing it isn't one of the most middle-class constituencies in the UK, never mind NI?

O’Neill, There is over 120 000 people living in North Down, yes it has a sizeable middle class population (the Diana Peacocke’s of this world) but if you actually look at the constituency as a whole it has large areas of crime and deprivation, some of the most serious problems with paramilitaries in Northern Ireland and particularly poor education standards in its secondary schools.

It certainly isn’t “almost bereft of less well off working people” as was originally claimed.
