The North Down Neutral Candidate?

Martin Kettle:
I suspect the next Speaker will come, just possibly, from one of the really minor parties – in which case the only plausible candidate would be Plaid Cymru's Elfyn Llwyd or the Ulster Unionist Sylvia Hermon –

If the latter was chosen, it would certainly make things complicated...but the quote isn't finished:
-or, far more likely, from the Conservative benches

What pointless statement then....

Hermon hasnt a prayer after her slective criticism of the Conservatives over the recent expenses scandals

Actually if she WAS made Speaker it would solve the whole issue-it would no longer matter whether she supported UCUNF.

It would be great to think that MPs understood just how debauched our parliamentary democracy has become and chose someone who could reverse this. Personally, I don't care which party he/she hailed from - provided that they had total dedication to restoring the Churchillian model of MP's duties and the true sovereignty of parliament. It's arguable that the vast majority of members of the Tory/Labour parliamentary parties are just too cowed by decades of vicious bullying and whipping to do this. But whoever gets the job, this HAS to be a turning point for our democracy.

Yellowplush,

I'd like to be optimistic about your last statement, I really would.

With my MP putting himself forward for the post I'm fairly optimistic. He's a good constituency man - better than the Labout flunkies that I've had to endure elsewhere in North East England. But whether he's got enough power and support to cause a sytem shift...Here's hoping though
