LABOUR AMs have been instructed not to join a cross-party group aimed at preparing the ground for a Yes vote in the promised referendum on full lawmaking powers for the National Assembly.
Plaid Cymru AM Bethan Jenkins announced on Monday that she was hoping to set up a network where sympathetic politicians and others could discuss how a future Yes campaign should get its message across.
Yesterday morning, however, the 26 Labour AMs were sent an email warning them not to get involved in any such discussions.
The email, sent by Anthony Cooper, head of the Labour group office at the Assembly and quickly leaked to the Western Mail, said:
"Further to any inquiries you might receive regarding the establishment of any groups to look at a future referendum on the Assembly’s powers, the Chief Whip has asked me to remind Members that the Labour Group position is that any such approaches are premature, as they would pre-empt the important work of the National (sic) Convention. Please let me know if you have any queries regarding this."
Yes,actually, I’ve got a query.
With it now being a "National" Convention, can the rest of us in the UK all join in with our tuppence worth?
You really get the impression their collective heart’s not in it.

The "National" Convention being the same National as the National Assembly, National Museum, National Swimming Pool, National Velodrome, National Gardens, National caves (honestly!)
(i.e. the Nation of Wales not the Nation of the UKoGB&NI)
