Lessons to be learnt by UK Unionism from how the various Slavic regions suffered in the wake of the demise of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire*

Blogging will be sporadic over the next week or so, as we’re soon off on our travels again; this time on what can be very loosely described as a research project (*something along those lines, similarish, in a roundabout way, kind of).

Map-reading, fan-belt and ticket-availability willing, the tour will finish here, Maribor, Slovenia on 11th October.

Such evils as being taught in your own language, not being subjected to the slow humiliation of magyarization, reversing the deliberate retardation of your economy… enough of my poisonous independence bile! :) I hope you have a great time on your trip it is a truly fantastic part of the world. I was lucky enough to study with Dr Mary Heimann, a prominent historian of 20th century Czechoslovakia who is well known for ripping up the myths punted at the time and for years after by unionists and nationalists alike.

I'd be interested in the results of a straw poll of Czechs, Slovaks, Slovenes, Poles, Romanians, Croats, Italians, Ruthenians etc who would like to return to direct Vienna – Budapest rule.

I can’t wait to see what grotesque interwar parallels you are going to conjure up.

I suppose Scotland might be comparable to the Czechlands- at the time of independence being an inheritor of a modern functioning developed economy and having a relatively privileged position in their previous union with a ruling class who were hell bent on maintaining it for their own personal wealth and power. But once the Czechoslovak state, like the UK the result of a political shotgun marriage suited to now vastly outdated political conditions, got up and running Scotland seems to mirror Slovakia more closely in terms of attitude. Which is many ways is a real shame.

I await your posts with genuine interest. Bon voyage

anonymous,
My better half works for an NGO which deals with most of region of the old Austrian Hungarian ( specifically the *new* EU and the *old* Yugoslavia) Although I have an interest (and have done several articles/posts about the area), she's the one doing the actual work! They have published a few reports covering things like media and judicial independence, treatment of minorities; if you're interested drop me an email and I'll point you in the right direction.

wyrdtimes,
Yes I'm fine thanks, just up to my eyes with work at the minute.
