The SNP join the UUP in Dave's all-inclusive vision of a sort of Union

Remember what I said about our "best" troops refusing to fight?
But Cameron is also pragmatic: he understands that the Tories stand no chance of winning the argument in Scotland for the union, least of all against an opponent as formidable as Alex Salmond.

That's the True Brit spirit....rolling up the white flag before the battle's even begun.
That is why, I can reveal, allies of Cameron have entered into informal talks with the SNP over recent months.

Their objective is to save the union by working out a new kind of constitutional settlement for Scotland.

Details are sketchy, but it is possible to indicate the main outlines.

An incoming Tory administration would need to meet Alex Salmond's demands that the Scottish Parliament should have massive new powers over taxation and public spending.

In domestic terms, a Scottish administration would be entirely self-governing and have complete command over economic policy.

And yet the union could be maintained through the retention of shared armed forces, and foreign policy, and the monarchy.

Another convenient leak to test the Tory grassroot's reaction?
If so, then Dave get rest easy, it would appear from the lack of any meaningful opposition that a nice inoffensive dash of yellow will be soon joining the traditional Conservative red, white and blue.

That sounds shrewd; David Cameron is clearly nobody's fool. I hope it works and Scotland remains with us.

I just can't see how you can "fight" nationalism by this kind of collaberation. There's clearly some planning at work here, darned if I can fully comprehend it.

How do you "fight" the incoming tide? C'mon man time to stop the pretence that Scottish independence just aint happening. My country shouldn't really be used as a pawn by a bunch of Unionists in Ireland who do not want to reach a settlement with their fellow Irishmen and wimmen. Time to deal methinks.......................before the tide comes in.

As far as Salmond dealing with Dave, he is far too astute to settle for the entree when he knows a little patience will bring main course and desert. Cliched up tonight I am ;¬)

"An incoming tide"

Billy Hills or Ladbrokes seldom give odds of 20/1 on "incoming tides"!

"My country shouldn't really be used as a pawn by a bunch of Unionists in Ireland who do not want to reach a settlement with their fellow Irishmen and wimmen"

1. We won't have any vote on Scotland's future, so we are not even part of the game- still allowed an opinion though.
2. We have reached a settlement- the Belfast Agreement- I don't agree with all of it, but the vast majority of Irish people both sides of the border seem happy with it.

And I don't think any of us should underestimate Cameron, there is a Machiavelian side to him that I hadn't really noticed before; I suspect there is some serious planning going on behind the scenes.
