Quote of the day

There's nobody more British than I am, and that's why I don't need a "Britishness Day" holiday to celebrate the fact.

Leaving aside the crassness of immigration minister Liam Byrne's idea of having his 24 hours of rejoicing on a day that isn't a public holiday in Scotland - perhaps he wants only the English, Welsh and Northern Irish to join in his merrymaking - it's simply not necessary to celebrate Britishness. It's not our way, precisely because we're British

My neighbours in Edinburgh are a mixture of Geordie, Northern Irish, Yorkshire, Home Counties… and, yes, Scots. We're just Brits - mongrels all - and I don't think we need a special day to celebrate the fact.

Update:
No post on here about British identity is complete without also getting Billy Bragg's opinion on the matter, so here you go...
