What's a bit of data between ex-friends?

I don't think this story has really got the publicity it deserved:
A total of 16 laptop computers have disappeared from executive departments in the past year.

They were among a total of 38 electronic devices that were listed as lost or stolen since the start of May 2007.

Those electronic devices include digital cameras, mobile phones, Blackberries and memory sticks.

Not to worry too much though:
The Department of Trade and Enterprise and the Office of the First and Deputy First Ministers were unaffected

Which just leaves about another 9 or so rather important Departments/offices

It's not the devices themselves which are that important, but more the data contained on them, data which has been input by folk working for or in our "government". Is it beyond the realms of possibility that there could be, I dunno, you know important stuff on there, addresses, places of employment, that kind of thing? Stuff which might be conceivably useful to those "not committed to the Peace Process" (aka dissident republicans)?

Would we (or more especially the Dupes) been so blase about all this a couple of years ago?
