The likes of Walter Scott, Robert Burns, Gilbert Murray, David Hume, Adam Smith, Thomas Telford, James Clerk Maxwell, John Logie Baird and Alexander Fleming have had a massive influence on the world. They would all have been lesser figures, nonentities even, if the culture in which they were immersed had not been integral with that of the rest of what is now the UK.
