Quote of the Day

Let's use our heritage to rewrite that story so it is truly inclusive... so we have an identity which binds us in the stormy times we are going to have in the next century

Can you "rewrite" history?
Trevor Phillips, the head of the new "human rights and equality commission", seems to think so.

I'd say "no".

There is a greater need to put it into the context of the times, more detachment is also important (Tony Blair is not personally responsible for the Irish Famine, nor Peter Hain the slave trade).

But trying to airbrush unsavoury events, making things more acceptable for a contemporary society, is taking the easy way out and ultimately only stores up more problems for future generations.
