My mate Edwin has convened a meeting of the Assembly’s "Culture" committee, containing such luminaries as Barry McElduff, the Sinn Fein star from Omagh, who once insisted on speaking in Irish to a visiting senior Dutch EU Commissioner, only to be offended when the Dutchman responded (in Danish) that he couldn't understand a word McElduff was saying.
Anyway enough on Barry, this is the latest score on the new National Stadium, according to Edwin:
1.Rugby authorities favour a Belfast site.
2.The Irish Football Association was "open to various sites", but rather bizarrely, its chief executive, Howard Wells was described has having a "personal preference for the Maze, which is a former prison." I think the latter relative clause is probably unnecessary, but more importantly, who cares what Well's personal preference is? The IFA should be representing the interests of the majority of the fans who are apparently overwhelmingly against the Maze.
And most intriguingly (in terms of what has been left out)
3. The GAA had ruled out proposed stadia on both the Belfast North Foreshore site and the Titanic Quarter. But no specific mention of being that bothered one way or the other by the Maze project.
Poots went on to say, "cross-community consensus was essential."
Now, if the big-wigs of the three main sporting associations can’t come to a consensus, then it probably follows on that the different communities won’t either, especially when Sinn Fein seem determined to tag along their "Conflict Resolution Centre" as part of the package.
No cross-community consensus, then no new stadium either at the Maze or in Belfast. Other options mention were "virtual Belfast" (Huh? what's that?) and a "cost analysis of refurbishing existing sporting venues".
Interesting this latter option has now appeared, especially since Poot’s rather arrogant statement last month. But of the three possibilities it to me,seems to be the one which makes most sense; saves money, less political tension and the rest of us can bury this artificially imposed "shared-future" political nonsense and get on with the sport.
And oh yeah, Poots Must Still Go!
Update:
Edwin revealed to be an idiot or liar, you choose.
Either way, the Maze "Project" has been dealt another blow.
