Oops, did he really mean to say that?

Matt Carthy, Sinn Féin member of Carrickmacross Town Council and Monaghan County Council, speaking yesterday at the Sean O'Carroll and Patrick Tierney Commemoration:
Take the issue of policing, for example. A tough decision for many republicans, myself included, was taken. But witnessing the crisis caused with unionism and elements of the British establishment it is clear that the republican leadership (made up of the same calibre of people as Seán O Carroll and Patrick Tierney) took an initiative which has the potential to undermine the solidity of the 6 county state
My emphasis. Not quite the same words McGuinness and the leadership are using to promote the transfer of "policing and justice", but probably a much more honest assessment of both Republican thinking and the reality of the situation.

They'll never support Northern Ireland. They use some twisted, arcane logic to participate in NI politics and Stormont.

Their terminology and attitudes speak volumes. "Ne'er the Twain Shall Meet" and all that rot.

Do they really believe that Stormont will eventually "deliver" their goal of destroying NI?

For some reason I'm quite indifferent as to the future existance of the Executive; though the prospect of "greener" direct rule is utterly unpalatable.

Many people said similar things in the south 80 years go about De Valera and Fianna Fail when they entered the Dail. The reality was otherwise.

SF will learn the lesson that all political parties use whatever institutions that are there to advance the interests of the parties policy. FF had just 2 policies 80 years ago; restoration of the Irish language and the drainage of the Shannon (don't laugh after last week's floods. Clearly something happened to them sonewhere along the line.

The reality of a political dynamic in Stormont will likewise divert SF. I wouldn't be betting on SF walking away at all.

Link's now up.

Apparently also Chairman of SF's Monaghan Branch so a pretty prominent backwoodsman, although obviously not quite the grasp of the difference between what SF what really believe and what they want the rest of us to believe they believe.
