Danny Kennedy MLA, the Deputy Leader of the Ulster Unionist Party, commenting on today's County Meath meeting of Sinn Fein, has said that Sinn Fein is in crisis and is now clearly seen by voters n the Irish Republic as a just another Northern Ireland Party. No, it doesn't, it registers basically a rejection of Sinn Fein and possibly a personal snub to Grizzly's leadership in the Republic of Ireland, the ROI's electorate weren't voting on a "United" Ireland.
"The Vice-President of Sinn Fein, Mary Lou MacDonald, Gerry Adams's deputy, lost her Dublin seat in the European Parliament. This is a rejection of Sinn Fein and a personal snub to Gerry Adams's leadership."
"This is an important historical moment because it registers the end of a united Ireland as a realistic political goal.
Sinn Fein has become irrelevant in the republic and is seen as just another Northern Ireland party.Yes and yes, for the present moment at least.
"It is ironic that, at the very time that the political goal of an all-Ireland republic is politically dead that Northern Ireland voters are being offered a real unionist alternative with the new partnership between the Ulster Unionist Party and the Conservative Party, the next Government of the UK."Oh good, that means we don't need to worry too much more about all that old "hearts and minds" nonsense, Sinn Fein have won the Union for us...
"This is really an historic moment when unionism has triumphed over the idea of a united Ireland. "
Voters right across the spectrum now have the chance to vote for a real British party in the Conservative and Ulster Unionist partnership.Indeed they have, but there's no guarantee they will simply because the choice is there, we need to be building up something worthwhile and even different from what's on offer at the moment.
This offers a real unionism as opposed to the failed nationalism of Sinn Fein which has lost all credibility, certainly as far as the voters in the Irish Republic are concerned."
The voters in the Irish Republic are unfortunate enough not to have the opportunity to vote for the pan-UK Unionism that will hopefully be on offer soon- they are irrelevant in the context that matters, elections in Northern Ireland.
The real question Dannny should be concerning himself with is:
"Has Sinn Fein's twisted version of communal ethno-nationalism failed here, the place where it counts and causes actual real, human damage?"
No, so it's really too early to be gloating about any inevitable outcomes.
