It is hard not to feel a certain sense of pity for Sinn Fein over this issue. Having promised their die-hard supporters an all-encompassing Irish Language Act, the best they can manage is a central government bail-out for the Irish Language Broadcasting Fund. This decision taken by the government at Westminster represents nothing more than a fig leaf to save the embarrassment of Gerry Adams over his failure to deliver on Sinn Fein’s promised Irish Language.
I feel no pity whatsoever for Sinn Fein over this issue.
As with any other politicians elected by British citizens, they have a full 100% right (and indeed, responsibility) to approach the head of the United Kingdom’s government on such issues. And Irish-language activists really should be pondering whether such an Irish Language Act is more likely to be deliver by Westminster or our own wee Toytown parliament.
