It is a very strange feature of the republic that newspapers whose content is largely concerned with the UK with token 'Irish' content sell so well. In Holland you see no Belgian newspapers for sales except in the foreign section and the same is true in Belgium as regards Dutch newspapers. Basically the UK newspapers can treat the island of Ireland as a UK region because Irish people are quite happy to buy slightly tailored versions of UK newspapers. Personally I don't like this too much but it's a free country so if people want an Irish Sun there isn't too much anybody can do about it.
Personally, I buy a mix of both UK and ROI papers for different reasons.
The Irish times is a great read, although a little too upper class at times.
I like reading a range of the UK papers, bar ze tabloids, because its always interesting to read stories from many angles, especially Irish related stories. Also, some of the UK papers have more extras which can be a good read.
As for Irish people accepting obviously UK papers peppered with small tidbits of Irish news stories... duno. Page 3 reads the same in the ROI as in the UK ;)
I do occasionally dip into the Irish Times and access a few of the other ROI's papers via Nuzhound.
But you simply can't rely on them and even more so the Newsletter, Irish News and Belly(laugh) Tele for a wider perspective of what's going on in the world.

The Sunday Times is looking for a *ahem* regional editor to cover two rather large UK(?) regions:
Thats newspapers based on the mainland for you ;)
