Who's using who?

Iain Martin hit it bang on the button in Saturday’s Daily Telegraph:
Salmond, ahead of Westminster and the next Scottish elections, has the Tories where he wants them. A master player of the game has a clear plan to neutralise the Unionist opposition parties. Labour is playing its part by self-destructing, he does everything to marginalise the Liberals and has co-opted the Tories (with cups of tea and cosy chats in his office).

Salmond never makes a move he has not calculated precisely. He's the cleverest actor on the stage and the Tories are willingly turning themselves into his extras

And I’ve mentioned before, such a scenario by which the Scottish Tories end up effectively becoming Salmond’s lackies could well play into the hands of the Little Englander wing of the Conservative Party south of the border who wish to pull the Union further to stretching point for purely populist and opportunistic reasons.

Like Martin I believe The Economist and Conservative Home are both missing the bigger picture; whilst Conservatives helping out salmond in Scotland may make sense for purely party political reasons, it can only succeed in further weakening the United Kingdom.
