If it wasn't nationalism, then what was it?

The next British-Irish Ministerial meeting will be taking place in Dublin today (hence Alex Salmond’s speech at Trinity last night).

One of the Welsh delegates, Social Justice Minister Brian Gibbons, has a very close connection with the Republic, here’s a quote from his interview with IC Wales:
Four years later he began practising in Blaen-gwynfi, near Port Talbot, and he joined the Labour Party. Welsh nationalism held no attraction for the young doctor, who was dismayed at the violence in Ireland.

He said, "From that context I thought nationalism and unionism were contributing to the problem rather than the solution."

It would be interesting to know why that opinion changed.
