According to you:
Alex Salmond: 39%
Ian Paisley: 24%
Gordon Brown: 22%
David Cameron: 5%
The European Union: 12%
OK, the poll’s now officially closed and Alex Salmond has won his first award of the New Year and it’s one I’m sure he’ll be very proud of as he has been declared by "A Pint of Unionist Lite" readers :
The Biggest Threat to the Union.
Not a great surprise there, but in the battle for second place, it was interesting to see a wafer-thin difference between the votes received for Dr Yes and Gordon Brown; despite both being self-declared "Unionists" a combined total of 46% of you reckoned them to be providing a bigger danger to the UK’s future than the Bold Alex. The problem with both Northern Ireland’s esteemed First Minister and the UK’s Prime-Minister is that their "Unionism" is one of convenience, Big Ian’s prime goal in life has always been the preservation and promotion of his own peculiar form of evangelical protestantism , Gordon’s has been the preservation and promotion of Gordon Brown. In both cases, the continuance of the Union has been and remains simply the best way to achieve those narrow targets in the short-term; both however would sell their souls, never mind their British birthright, for the sake of that short-term gain.
The European Union pops up with a healthy 12%, simply I suspect because it is the European Union and David Cameron runs in last with a measly 5%. I think Dave’s wrecking potential has been underestimated here, let’s wait and see what his solution is for the West Lothian Question due early in the New Year, before we start proclaiming him the Saviour of the UK.
Now, anyway, in recognition of Alex’s achievement (and in an attempt to blow away the cobwebs) I’d like to dedicate this tune to him, Dr Paisley and Gordon Brown, who’ve all played their own part in delivering....
