Welsh Rarebit, or caws pobi (Welsh for toasted cheese), was known to be wholly our delicacy as early as 1542; and no-one else dared - or maybe cared - to say otherwise...

And following after last week's good news on the Cornish pastie, it's St David's Day, so there you go, have some of that:

Wales devolution legacy

""Even more intriguing was Conservative support. In 1919, a group of Tory backbenchers declared that legislative devolution was vital, if only to ensure that the ‘Imperial’ Parliament did not suffer from congestion. In 1920, I Forestier-Walker, Conservative MP for Monmouth, was a co-signatory of a resolution declaring that:

“A [devolved] parliament, directly elected, alone can satisfy the national aspirations of the Welsh people.”

Indeed, the sole dissidence voice came from the newly founded Plaid Genedlaethol Cymru, whose president, Saunders Lewis, made a bitter attack upon what he called “the barren pursuit of statehood”."
