So good....

72% of Scots would not vote for Independence...

Welsh Conservatives on target to make 10 possible *gains* in the year’s General Election...

The DUP’s continuing (and with more promised for this weekend apparently) travails delivering an open goal* for the Conservatives/UUP in Northern Ireland...

Good times for United Kingdom Unionism!

*The cynic/pessimist would probably point out that even open goals require a tap in... but I've locked the cynicism and pessimism away, for today at least!

Yir arithmetic is shite btw. However this is old ground if they truly believe that two thirds would vote against then the pro-English/British parties would accede to supporting the proposed referendum. Their stated reasons why they don't are ever changing(and hollow at that) but the simple fact remains.

Not sure how you have managed to put the likes of me in with the DUP. Whilst I commend your hypocritical honesty on occasion Oneil you are keek as a spin doctore ;¬)

A clear majority of Scots believe key decisions on tax and welfare should be taken by MSPs, according to a major survey of political attitudes to be released today.

Since neither control of tax or welfare is ever going to be given to Holyrood by Westminster then what the majority of Scots want is something they'll never be given and since the majority of Scots don't like the status quo then their only option is to go for independence.

PS I put a comment in on the Manchester post. Did it get lost in the ether or a spam filter somewhere?

Doug,

I have had comment moderation on for a few months now so unfortunately comments don't appear up realtime. It wrecks the spontaneity of the blog for sure but I was getting p-ed off spending half my mornings deleting spam and the occasional bit of abuse.

I'll be answering both you and Tony over the weekend, but after a lull 8 comments have overwhelmed me!

"Yir arithmetic is shite btw."

Not for the first time! Now corrected.

"Their stated reasons why they don't are ever changing(and hollow at that) but the simple fact remains."

As you know, I think they're wrong.

"Not sure how you have managed to put the likes of me in with the DUP. Whilst I commend your hypocritical honesty on occasion Oneil you are keek as a spin doctore"

As a nationalist, looking to undermine the Union, who would you rather see as NI MPs in Westminster, Willie McCrea (just to take an example from the top of my head) or someone fresh from the Conservatives-UUP? If it's the former, then that's your first point answered. Not sure how someone can be "hypocritical" and "honest" at the same time though...

Even if that is true, 28-72 is a very big gap to overturn...

Only if the 72% are hard line unionist. If they are close to choosing independence but not quite then it's not such a big gap. Since a large chunk of those questioned wanted most taxation and other powers to be run from Holyrood it may not be that hard a gap to close.
