In elections the DUP remains the party of choice of UDA members.
You have to declare your paramilitary membership now before you vote??
Otherwise, how exactly has Mr Feeney arrived at this conclusion?
Another slight quibble...
It's a matter of the DUP's whole attitude to the principles of modern liberal society as it has developed in Europe since the Enlightenment and inspired revolution in the US and France and produced democracy all over Europe – principles like religious toleration, the separation of Church and state, meritocracy, abolishing hereditary privilege, not to mention the decriminalisation of homosexuality. The DUP opposes all of these principles and much else besides. In short it is not recognisable as a modern political party.
I’m not sure Brian’s ever been out of Our Wee Country.
Elements of the Republican party in the US, the PP in Spain, the Christian Democratic parties in Germany and Italy and a several other more nationalistic parties in Europe would agree with the DUP on many of their policies re gay rights, role of Christianity within modern Europe etc, etc.
Nevertheless, subtract all his usual bombast, one-eyedness and generally crap writing, there is a true essential point at the core of Feeney’s article...the DUP are hypocrites.
True, they have been too comfy in the past with the loyalist paramilitaries, whilst bellyaching about SFIRA; they have also sold themselves as a Unionist party when they quite clearly are not and never have been. They are Ulster nationalists who are happy to pull further and further away from the UK in order to reinforce a fundamentalist Prodistan, their own tightly-controlled religio-ethnic fiefdom within a federal Ireland. The DUP and their head honcho may be many things, British and Unionist they are not.
